A 17-year-old man has died in hospital following an accident involving “subway surfing” at the U4 U-Bahn station Schönbrunn earlier this week.

An 18-year-old remains in a critical condition.

Following the incident, the 17-year-old was taken to the Trauma Centre Meidling with life-threatening injuries, while the 18-year-old is being treated at the AKH.

On Tuesday afternoon, the two, alongside two other teenagers aged 13 and 16, climbed onto the roof of a U4 train. Just before reaching the Schönbrunn station, the 17-year-old and the 18-year-old collided with a footbridge. The 13-year-old emerged unscathed, while the 16-year-old sustained minor injuries.

In the aftermath of the accident, Wiener Linien, Vienna’s transport authority, has urged passengers to “immediately activate the emergency call facilities on the trains or at the station” if they observe any dangerous situations.
