German sporting goods manufacturer Adidas is set to close the offices of sports app developer Runtastic in Pasching, near Linz, as well as in Salzburg and Vienna.
Around 170 employees will be affected by the decision, the company confirmed in a press release. They will have the chance to apply for roles at Adidas sites in Herzogenaurach, Germany, as well as Amsterdam and Zaragoza.
The Runtastic running app, now called Adidas Running, will be managed from these locations in the future. The aim is to streamline expertise and digital competencies across fewer sites.
“As a result of this decision, the Runtastic locations in Austria – Pasching, Vienna, and Salzburg – where recent work on the running app was focused, will be gradually closed by mid-2025,” the company stated.
Runtastic was founded in 2009 by Austrian university friends Florian Gschwandtner, Christian Kaar, René Giretzlehner and Alfred Luger. In 2015, Adidas acquired the start-up for €220 million. Since the takeover, the app has been increasingly integrated with other digital platforms.
