
Austrian campsites recorded 8.5 million overnight stays in 2024 – a rise of more than 2% compared to the previous year, continuing a steady upward trend, according to data from the booking platform camping.info, based on figures from Statistik Austria, released on Friday.
Carinthia, Tyrol and Salzburg emerged as the most popular regions, while Lower Austria and Vienna recorded the fewest overnight stays.
“Camping in Austria, with its excellent offerings of winter and wellness camping, is increasingly becoming a year-round holiday option,” said Maximilian Möhrle, Managing Director of camping.info. The camping sector made a strong start in 2024, with over 189,000 overnight stays in March – double the previous year’s figure.
An increasing number of holidaymakers are also opting for winter camping, with overnight stays in November and December rising by 15% to 17% compared to 2023.
Carinthia remains the “Camping Champion,” with more than 2.5 million overnight stays. Tyrol follows closely behind with 2.4 million overnight stays, marking a rise of 5.1%. Salzburg saw around 940,000 overnight stays, a slight decrease of 0.7%, while Styria recorded nearly 760,000 overnight stays, up by 6%. Upper Austria saw over 510,000 overnight stays, an increase of 3%.
Burgenland and Vorarlberg are mid-table, with 500,000 and 430,000 overnight stays, respectively. Burgenland experienced a rise of 4.8%, while Vorarlberg saw a decline of 5.1%. Lower Austria recorded an increase of 5.9%, with 310,000 overnight stays, while Vienna finished at the bottom with just 95,000 overnight stays, a drop of 8.5%.
