Just over half of people in Austria are satisfied with the domestic healthcare system, although concerns about the quality of services and treatments persist, according to the “Austrian Health Report” commissioned by the pharmaceutical company Sandoz.

Overall, 51% of respondents express satisfaction with the domestic healthcare system, while 15% are not at all satisfied.

However, Reinhard Raml from the market research institute IFES described the respondents’ views on the healthcare system as alarming during a presentation this week, noting that nearly half believe the quality of treatment is dependent on financial resources.

According to Raml, this result is better than last year; however, the long-term trend shows a significant decline in satisfaction. “A two-tier system is perceived by the public,” Raml explained, highlighting that previously the main concern was the speed of treatment, but now there are also perceived differences in quality.

Young people in particular are calling for improved mental health services. Raml also noted that the demand for preventive care is low, emphasising the need for shorter waiting times and more reliable care.

Naghme Kamaleyan-Schmied, vice president of the Austrian Medical Chamber, pointed out that there has been “a downward spiral” in the healthcare system over recent years. To counter this, she argued for greater emphasis on preventive care, which is focused on alleviating suffering rather than on financial cost. Prevention is also necessary to address the rising obesity rates among young people.

To increase the number of doctors, fair compensation is essential, Kamaleyan-Schmied stated. “If a private doctor is worth €150 to patients, why is a public doctor only worth 7.20 euros in the eyes of politics?” she questioned, highlighting the issue of doctor shortages within the public system.

Regarding the production of medications in Austria, the “Austrian Health Report” indicates there is “a consensus that the production of medicines in Austria is valuable.” There is a call for stronger collaboration with politicians regarding the framework conditions. Pricing policies are crucial for maintaining the industry in Austria, and she also emphasised that higher prices are sometimes accepted for medications produced locally.
