From November 1 to April 15, Austria once again enforces its situational, weather-dependent winter equipment requirement. Starting Saturday, cars may only be driven in snow, slush, or ice conditions if equipped with winter tires. “Even if driving with summer tires is still allowed in mild weather, it’s advisable to schedule a tire change early,” said ÖAMTC technician Steffan Kerbl.

Driving with summer tires in winter not only endangers one’s own safety but also risks heavy fines and insurance problems. In Austria, improper tires can result in an administrative penalty starting at around 100 euros. If other road users are also endangered, the theoretical maximum fine can reach 10,000 euros, warned the ÖAMTC. Snow chains are not a substitute for proper tires, as they may only be used on snow-covered roads. Those traveling by car for winter holidays should also carefully check the tire regulations in the countries they plan to visit.
