Ten years after the mysterious disappearance of two men from the Mühlviertel region, the case now appears to be solved. On Wednesday, a car was discovered and recovered from the Lipno Reservoir in the Czech Republic—the same vehicle in which the two 26-year-old friends were traveling in September 2015. A spokesperson for the Upper Austrian police confirmed media reports on Thursday. Human remains were found inside the car, and DNA analysis is still pending to conclusively determine their identities.
The Czech military had been conducting diving exercises in the reservoir when soldiers came across the car, which turned out to be the vehicle belonging to the missing men from the Mühlviertel, the police spokesperson added. The wreck was pulled from the water, and human remains were discovered inside. On Wednesday evening, Czech police informed their Upper Austrian counterparts.
On September 11, 2015, the two friends met in the evening in Zwettl an der Rodl (Urfahr-Umgebung District). That night, they are believed to have spontaneously decided to drive toward the small town of Vyšší Brod, located just a few kilometers away across the Czech border. In the early morning hours, their car was last recorded by a camera at a roundabout in Bad Leonfelden. After that, all traces vanished. Whether they ever reached their destination remains unknown. To leave no stone unturned, the Upper Austrian Criminal Police Office decided in 2016 to present the case on the TV program Aktenzeichen XY Spezial – Wo ist mein Kind?
