In a dramatic turn of events, police arrested a car thief in Thalheim near Wels on Sunday morning after an extensive search that lasted several hours.

The incident began on Saturday evening when a 32-year-old man attacked a 58-year-old car owner who was sitting in his parked SUV, reading emails on his mobile phone. The thief punched the victim in the head, forcibly dragged him out of the vehicle, and repeatedly kicked him before fleeing the scene in the stolen SUV, heading towards Thalheim, a police spokesperson confirmed to APA.

The thief’s escape came to a sudden halt in a Thalheim roundabout, where he collided with a car driven by a 52-year-old man. The collision caused total damage to the SUV, forcing the thief to attempt another carjacking. He attacked the second driver, trying to pull him out of the vehicle, but was stopped by the driver’s seatbelt. Abandoning the car, the thief fled on foot, prompting an overnight search by the police.

At approximately 6:00 AM, a nearby homeowner reported a man trespassing in his garden and managed to photograph the intruder. The man was quickly identified as the wanted car thief. Upon police arrival, the thief fled once again, even jumping into a creek and attacking the officers. However, with the assistance of police dogs, he was ultimately captured and taken into custody.

The initial victim of the carjacking, who sustained injuries from the attack, went to the hospital on his own. The 52-year-old driver of the second vehicle sustained minor injuries. The stolen SUV was declared a total loss, and the second car involved in the collision was also heavily damaged, police reported. The police continue investigating the incident.
