For the first time, some districts in Austria have surpassed a 50% share of electric cars in new vehicle registrations by mid-year, according to the Austrian Transport Club (VCÖ), citing data from Statistics Austria. In the federal state comparison, Salzburg and Upper Austria lead in electric car registrations. Among state capitals, Linz is at the top.
In Vienna’s Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus district, 58% of newly registered cars in the first half of the year were electric vehicles, followed by Vienna-Mariahilf at 56%. “What Denmark has already achieved nationwide has now been reached in two Austrian districts: More than half of newly registered passenger cars run entirely on electricity,” said VCÖ expert Katharina Jaschinsky.
Outside Vienna, no district has passed the 50% mark. The district of Rohrbach in Upper Austria has the highest electric car share at nearly 35%, followed by Kirchdorf (31%) and Graz-Umgebung (30%).
Nationwide, only two districts have electric car shares below 10%: Liezen in Styria (approx. 4%) and Reutte in Tyrol (approx. 6%).
Among the state capitals, Linz leads with a 29% EV share, followed by Salzburg and Eisenstadt. St. Pölten ranks last. However, all capitals now have EV shares above 20%.
