Erste Bank experienced widespread technical disruptions on Tuesday, leaving customers unable to access online banking services through the bank’s George app, its website, or in branches for several hours. Card payments and cash withdrawals were also affected.
The bank confirmed to The International that the issue was largely resolved by 13:00, after around three hours of outages. Peter Klopf, a spokesperson for Erste Group, which includes Erste Bank and Sparkasse, stated that any suggestion of hacking had been ruled out.
Erste Bank and Sparkasse together serve 4.2 million customers in Austria. “However, it may well be that we are not the primary bank for all of them, so it would be wrong to suggest that all 4.2 million customers were impacted by this development,” Klopf explained.
While most Erste Bank services are now functioning as normal, some users of the bank’s George mobile app may still face login issues if too many people attempt to access it at once. Klopf said this problem is expected to be resolved soon.
