The History of Vienna’s Easter Markets

Vienna’s Easter markets date back to the 17th century and originated from religious customs. The Kalvarienberg in Hernals was inaugurated in 1639 with a procession. Following the model of Jerusalem, a Jesuit sought to create a Church of the Holy Sepulchre and a Way of the Cross that extended from Schottentor to Hernals and served as a pilgrimage destination during Lent. With the pilgrimages, markets emerged that provided pilgrims with Lenten soups and simple food. These evolved into today’s Easter markets.

Further information is available via the Market Office hotline (4000-8090). The hotline is staffed Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
