The historic Hotel Bristol in central Vienna will close in March for a comprehensive renovation, with plans to reopen by Christmas 2027, its owner, the Sacher Group, has announced.

Opened on the Ringstrasse next to the State Opera in 1892, the Bristol has also served as the seat of the US High Commissioner for Austria and the US Embassy during Vienna’s post-World War II occupation from 1945 to 1955.

The iconic hotel, home to one of Vienna’s earliest electric elevators, will now undergo modernisation to meet the latest standards of energy efficiency, safety and guest comfort. Planned upgrades include the installation of photovoltaic panels, the introduction of district cooling and the creation of green spaces on the roof and in the courtyard.

Commitment to Staff

Matthias Winkler, CEO of the Sacher Group, said: “This renovation is not just an investment in the future of the Hotel Bristol, but also in the preservation of an iconic Vienna landmark.”

The company has also prioritised the welfare of its staff during the closure. A social plan has been negotiated with the works council and the union, ensuring that employees will have the opportunity to return once the hotel reopens.
