In the Waldviertel a glider crashed on Saturday afternoon. The Lower Austria Provincial Police Directorate confirmed to the APA a corresponding online report of the “Kronen Zeitung.” The pilot, according to the report, lost his life in the accident in Brand-Nagelberg in the Gmünd district.
Eyewitness reports were cited, according to which the plane crashed onto a road near a residential area. The glider is said to have taken off in the Czech Republic. The wreckage was apparently scattered many meters in the densely built-up residential area. Residents or passersby were not injured, according to initial information.
The operation on site, according to the “Krone,” was difficult. Because the rescue parachute of the plane, equipped with a detonator, had not deployed, the emergency forces could not initially approach the crash wreck for safety reasons. A cordon zone was first set up. Information on the cause of the accident was not yet available.
