A 60-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of setting fire to six cars in Vienna’s 21st district during the early hours of Wednesday, police have said.
The suspect is said to be a relative of one of the car owners. The regional criminal investigation department is now looking into allegations of arson.
“There are indications of prior family disputes, which may have included threats of this nature,” a police spokesperson said. The suspect, a Syrian national, has not yet been questioned by the authorities.
Firefighters were called out at around 4:00 am on Wednesday to tackle the burning cars in Achengasse and Kainachgasse. The fires were quickly put out, but photos show the cars are probably beyond repair. Investigators later found possible traces of accelerants at the scene.
