At the Nickelsdorf border crossing (Neusiedl am See district), a Romanian animal transporter carrying 26 dogs and eight cats was stopped on Saturday. The animals were intended to be handed over to their new owners at various rest stops. The truck was intercepted during a targeted inspection, the Burgenland State Police Directorate reported on Monday, leading to numerous charges.
During the inspection of the Romanian truck, which was en route to Germany, officers found that it lacked a valid transport license. Additionally, three dogs were found to have insufficient space, and one dog was deemed unfit for transport due to its age. The truck was also severely overloaded and leaking excessive amounts of oil from the engine area.
Another animal transporter from Hungary, also bound for Germany, was stopped during the operation. Among the 13 dogs being transported, seven were heavily soiled with excrement. This vehicle also lacked a valid transport license and the required authorization for long-distance transportation.
In total, 27 vehicles were inspected during the targeted operation. Authorities issued 18 security deposits and 11 charges under the Animal Transport Act. Additionally, 52 charges were filed for technical defects, 10 for overloading, and 55 for other violations.
