Stroller Fire in Vienna Triggers Major Rescue Operation

A fire involving two strollers in the stairwell of a residential building in Vienna’s Favoriten district caused a major response from fire and rescue services on Friday afternoon. A total of 37 people required emergency medical attention, with five of them being taken to the hospital. Police investigations aim to clarify why the strollers caught fire, according to a report by the Vienna Fire Department on Saturday.

The flames themselves were extinguished quickly. However, the fire in the building on Muhrengasse caused significant smoke in the stairwell and some apartments. This posed a danger to many residents, cutting off their escape route via the stairs. As a result, affected individuals were evacuated using ladders through the windows or with the help of so-called escape filter masks.

The fire brigade also rescued several pets: a cat and five birds. Additional measures included ventilating the stairwell and removing the remains of the burned strollers.
