Vienna invested almost €53 million in new cycling routes in 2024, adding over 23 km of bike lanes and surpassing last year’s achievements, according to a city press release.
The investment also covers 60 new projects that connect key parts of the main traffic network, with an additional 15 km added to the district network.
“We set high goals for 2024 to provide the city with the cycling infrastructure it deserves. The figures for 2024 surpass all expectations – a great success for which I would like to thank all the departments involved,” said Ulli Sima, Vienna’s City Councillor for Mobility. “We are on a really good path; if we continue like this, Vienna will soon have a bike network that truly deserves the name.”
In 2024, around 80% of the new infrastructure consisted of physically separated bike lanes, with a further 12% dedicated to bike streets, where cyclists have priority. “Only this way can we create a network that is attractive for all cyclists, from commuters to families and seniors,” explained Martin Blum, Vienna’s cycling commissioner.
Among the standout projects completed in 2024 were the redesigned Praterstraße bike lane and the new bike street on Argentinierstraße, finished just before Christmas. The Argentinierstraße project, inspired by Dutch models, features a red lane, traffic calming measures and greenery. Another significant project, the 1.2 km two-way bike path along Wiedner Hauptstraße, was completed as part of a wider street redesign.
New projects are already underway for 2025, including a 4 km cycling route in the western part of the city, with the first section along Hütteldorfer Straße now open. Plans to extend this route and further upgrade other key routes will continue in the coming years.
The city’s focus on bike safety also includes improving access to schools, with several projects completed in 2024 aimed at enhancing connections to educational institutions. For instance, a new two-way bike lane on Deutschordensstraße now provides safer routes for students and residents in the 14th district, Penzing.
Neighbourhood-specific cycling initiatives continue to expand, with significant improvements in districts such as the 22nd (Donaustadt), 10th (Favoriten), 21st (Floridsdorf) and 23rd (Liesing). In Donaustadt, temporary protected bike lanes were introduced on Wagramer Straße, while in Favoriten, new two-way bike lanes were added along Herndlgasse. The transformation of Mariahilfer Straße into a climate-friendly boulevard is also underway, with a dedicated two-way bike path planned for completion by 2025.
