It is already stated in the house rules, but implementation has so far fallen short: Loud phone calls and playing music without headphones are technically prohibited on Vienna’s public transit system, yet both continue to cause frustration among passengers. As reported by ORF Wien, a campaign beginning in March is intended to encourage greater consideration.

The current house rules of Wiener Linien state: “Any behavior that permanently disturbs the quiet privacy of other people” is prohibited. This includes loud phone calls, listening to music, and watching videos without headphones. Although these rules are currently monitored, misconduct is not penalized.

In an initial step, Vienna’s city councilor for transport, Ulli Sima (SPÖ), and Wiener Linien plan to focus on raising awareness in order to remind passengers of the rules. Penalties may follow in a later phase, it is reported.
