A 28-year-old Serbian man was critically injured on Sunday during a police firearms operation in Vienna-Brigittenau. According to the police, the man threatened officers with a kitchen knife. He did not respond to verbal commands or to a Taser deployment. When the situation became life-threatening, an officer fired shots.

The 28-year-old sustained life-threatening injuries and was immediately given emergency medical care by Vienna’s professional rescue service before being transported to a hospital. Officers from the special WEGA unit entered the apartment after the man’s parents called the emergency number, reporting grave concerns that their son—experiencing a psychological crisis—might harm himself.
