
In July 2025, 24,867 passenger cars were newly registered for traffic in Austria, an increase of 31.6 percent compared to July of the previous year. Electric passenger cars in particular saw strong growth, with an increase of 67.7 percent to 4,920 vehicles. Gasoline hybrids also recorded a significant increase of 62.7 percent with 8,715 new registrations, and diesel hybrids rose by 17.9 percent. Gasoline-powered cars (+5.3 percent) and diesel passenger cars (+2.3 percent) also posted slight gains, Statistics Austria reported on Monday.
From January to July 2025, a total of 167,918 passenger cars were newly registered, an increase of 9.0 percent compared to the same period of the previous year. Of these, 99,908 vehicles – 59.5 percent – had an alternative drive system, an increase of 39.6 percent. These included 54,349 gasoline hybrids (+44.0 percent), 36,454 purely electric cars (+45.2 percent), and 9,103 diesel hybrids (+4.9 percent). The number of conventionally powered gasoline and diesel passenger cars, on the other hand, fell by 17.5 percent.
There were also significant changes in the commercial vehicle market: new registrations of light trucks in class N1 rose in July by 127.3 percent due to the exemption from NoVA (standard fuel consumption tax) that has been in effect since the beginning of the month. In total, 37,046 motor vehicles were newly registered in July, 26.0 percent more than a year earlier.
