Salzburg ranked tenth among European airports for private jet landings last year, according to a new analysis by Greenpeace.

Salzburg recorded 4,511 arrivals, while Klagenfurt in Carinthia saw 1,148 landings.

Greenpeace examined the landing data from 45 European airports, stating that the primary reason for private jet flights during the summer months is holiday and leisure travel.

The data shows that the three most popular destinations were Nice, Geneva, and Palma de Mallorca. Last year, more than 117,000 flights to summer hotspots were recorded, generating over 520,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions, Greenpeace said in a press release.

In Salzburg, private jet traffic spiked during the Salzburg Festival. In Klagenfurt, private jets were responsible for more than half of the CO2 emissions during the summer months, according to Greenpeace’s analysis.

Greenpeace has once again called for an EU-wide ban on private jets.

“While people in Europe are grappling with the catastrophic effects of droughts and floods this summer, the super-rich are jetting carefree across Europe, heading for summer hotspots. This needs to stop,” said Jasmin Duregger, climate and energy expert at Greenpeace.

Nearly half of all flights analysed (42.6%) took place during the holiday season between June and September, accounting for 41.6% of the year’s CO2 emissions. The analysis also revealed that arrivals at popular summer destinations doubled in the summer compared to the off-season. In July, these arrivals surged by an average of 250% compared to January. Almost 12% of all private flights covered less than 250 kilometres, with the NGO urging that such short distances be travelled by climate-friendly trains instead.
