Austria’s largest science learning centre will open in central Vienna from 2027, following an announcement by the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the University of Vienna, and the Technical University of Vienna that they will take over the Aula of Sciences.

The historic 4,500-square-metre space on Wollzeile in Vienna’s first district dates back to the 17th century and is currently managed by the Ministry of Science.

The new venue – to be called the Science Communication Centre – will host exhibitions and special shows, showcasing current scientific topics both physically and digitally. In addition, there will be themed weeks, research events, workshops, and interactive laboratories. The centre aims to engage everyone interested in science and research, particularly young people still in education. Up to 70,000 visitors per year are expected.

Previously, the building was used for various meetings, conferences, and events, including the “Science Talks” hosted by the Ministry of Science. The three institutions will now replace the ministry as tenants, while ownership will remain with the Federal Real Estate Agency (BIG). Planning and tenders are set to begin immediately, with construction adaptations anticipated in 2026 and full operations starting in 2027. The project’s costs are estimated at around €17 million.
