From January 4 to 6, 2025, Austria will once again participate in the annual “Hour of Winter Birds,” where citizens count winter birds for one hour across the country. Since its inception in 2010, this event has become the largest citizen science initiative in Austria, according to BirdLife Austria, the organizing bird protection organization. This will be the 16th edition of the event. During the previous count, over 27,000 participants recorded more than 687,000 birds.

With 32 birds per report, this marked an increase compared to the very low year of 2023. However, BirdLife noted that the long-term trend remains negative. In the first six nationwide counts, there were approximately 40 birds per report, but in recent years, the results have barely exceeded 30 birds per report.

Long-term data sets are crucial in understanding the well-being of winter birds, said Gábor Wichmann, Managing Director of BirdLife Austria. “That’s why it’s important to pick up the binoculars, tally sheet, and pen again in 2025 to count the birds in your garden, on your balcony, or in the park for one hour between January 4 and 6 and report your findings to us.”

Even those with little experience in bird identification are encouraged to join in. For the first time, participants will have the opportunity to practice bird identification through online bird quizzes.
