An artwork by Austrian expressionist Egon Schiele has vanished from a private home in the Wachau region. According to the Federal Criminal Police Office (BK), the suspected theft occurred in April 2024, though a formal complaint was only recently filed, Lower Austria police spokesperson Raimund Schwaigerlehner confirmed on Sunday.

The missing piece, titled “Semi-Nude, Rear View”, is valued at between €1 and €2 million, the Kronen Zeitung reported. The 47 x 37.5 cm watercolor and pencil work is signed “Egon Schiele 1913” in the lower right corner, according to the BK.

Police said the painting has a certificate of authenticity. Investigators found no signs of forced entry at the home, and the case remains under investigation.
