Five people were injured after a 20-year-old man from Linz led police on a dramatic high-speed chase through the night on Friday, reaching speeds of up to 250 km/h in foggy conditions, before crashing.

The incident began just before 11:30pm when a plainclothes police unit attempted to stop the Hungarian national on the B1 (Wiener Straße) in Wels-West after he was seen crossing a solid line. The driver briefly came to a halt but then accelerated away at high speed, prompting the police to give chase.

“The pursuit reached speeds of up to 250 km/h on the A25,” authorities said. During the chase, the driver carried out “very dangerous overtaking manoeuvres.”

The suspect then veered back onto the B1 and continued at speeds of up to 190 km/h, despite the dense fog. In Marchtrenk, he collided with a car towing a trailer. The chase ended at the Traun intersection, on the border between Traun and Pasching, when the driver crashed into several stationary vehicles, including a police car.

The crash left the driver, his passenger, and several others injured, some of them seriously. The 20-year-old and his passenger were arrested and taken to hospital. Authorities confirmed the vehicle had stolen number plates and was not registered for road use. In addition, the driver did not hold a valid driving licence.
