Household energy prices in Austria dropped by 1.5 percent in March 2025 compared to February, according to the Energy Price Index (EPI) published by the Austrian Energy Agency. Despite the monthly decline, energy prices rose by 2.2 percent year-over-year, driven mainly by high electricity costs, which were 36.3 percent above March 2024 levels.
The steepest price drops were seen in heating oil, which fell by 4.1 percent month-over-month and 8.6 percent compared to the previous year. Diesel and gasoline prices also dropped by 3.2 percent compared to February. Gas prices remained stable compared to the previous month but were 11.6 percent lower than in March 2024.
Electricity and district heating each rose slightly by 0.2 percent month-over-month. According to energy agency expert Lukas Zwieb, the sharp annual increase in electricity prices is mainly due to the phase-out of government subsidies. He also noted that energy prices may continue to decline in April, supported by falling oil prices, a weak U.S. dollar, and increased solar power generation.
Prices for firewood and wood pellets remained stable or slightly declined, with firewood falling 1.1 percent and wood pellets increasing just 0.2 percent compared to February. Compared to March 2024, prices dropped by 9.5 and 10.5 percent respectively.
