Nestlé announced on Wednesday that it is recalling a batch of its Guigoz brand. The move runs counter to analysts’ expectations, who had not anticipated any additional recalls. Cereulide—a toxin that can cause nausea and vomiting—was detected in ingredients sourced from a factory in China.
Nestlé recall due to toxin in baby food ingredients
The factory supplies numerous infant formula manufacturers, including Danone and Lactalis. The findings have led to recalls in dozens of countries, including Austria. The case is overshadowed by an investigation by French judicial authorities, who are examining a possible link between the deaths of two infants and recalled Guigoz products, according to the public prosecutor’s office. France’s Health Ministry and Nestlé said, however, that there is currently no evidence of such a connection. Results are expected in the coming days. France tightened the permissible limit for cereulide on Saturday following a meeting with the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). Nestlé had already recalled batches of Guigoz and other brands in January and December.
