According to a survey conducted by the dating app Parship, 62 percent of singles said they live alone. However, nearly half of singles under 30 still live with their parents. Among those aged 30 to 39, the figure is still 27 percent, while from age 60 onward, 84 percent live alone. These findings were published Monday in a survey titled “How Singles Live.”

“A large proportion of singles value their own four walls as a place of retreat. They create spaces where they feel comfortable and can recharge—regardless of whether they live alone or with family,” said Parship psychologist Caroline Erb. Regardless of age, singles feel safe in their own homes (88 percent), appreciate their surroundings (86 percent), and are satisfied with their living situation (83 percent). However, when asked whether their neighborhood offers much for singles, only one in three of the 435 respondents agreed.

Ten percent of singles said they are single parents living with their children, while in the 40-to-49 age group, that figure rises to one in four. In this group, financial strain is the greatest: 28 percent struggle to cover housing costs. Overall, 17 percent of Austrian singles find it difficult to pay rent, utilities, and other housing expenses. Shared apartments remain the exception, with only five percent of singles living in a shared flat—among 18-to-29-year-olds, the share is eight percent.
