The U.S. administration under President Donald Trump intends to detach Austria and three other states from the European Union, according to a media report. As the platform Defense One reported, citing a longer, previously unpublished version of the new U.S. national security strategy, Austria, Hungary, Italy, and Poland are listed as countries with which the United States “should work more closely… with the aim of pulling them away from the (European Union).”

The newspapers Die Presse and Der Standard also reported on the document. Based on the premise that Europe faces a “civilizational extinction” due to its immigration policies and “censorship of free expression,” the strategy paper proposes that the United States focus its relationships in Europe on a limited number of nations with like-minded—presumably right-leaning—governments and movements.

The cited national security strategy continues: “And we should support parties, movements, as well as intellectual and cultural figures who seek sovereignty and the preservation/restoration of traditional European ways of life… while remaining pro-American.”

“Make Europe Great Again”

According to Defense One, the Trump administration wants to “make Europe great again” while urging European NATO members to wean themselves off American military support.

The U.S. security strategy sparked heated debate in the Austrian National Council on Wednesday. The NEOS used a special Europe session to sharply criticize the FPÖ and what they described as other “accomplices” of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Now is the moment to choose a stronger and more self-confident Europe, said Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger (NEOS).
