A serial burglar is suspected of targeting elderly residents in Vienna’s Hietzing district between 2019 and 2025 in at least three known cases. The man allegedly approached seniors on the street, stole their keys, and then looted their apartments. The damage from these three incidents alone amounts to more than €600,000, police reported Thursday. Stolen items included cash, jewelry, and gold coins. The 49-year-old suspect was arrested this week. Additional possible victims are being asked to come forward.

After intensive investigations by the Vienna Criminal Police Office, Western Branch, in close cooperation with the Federal Criminal Police Office, the suspect was identified Tuesday in the Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus district by officers from the Street Crime Task Force (EGS). Police stopped the man and arrested him. On orders from the Vienna Public Prosecutor’s Office, he has since been transferred to a correctional facility.

Two Victims Caught The Suspect In The Act
The Romanian national, who has prior convictions and no registered residence in Austria, is accused of mainly targeting elderly people as they left their homes or stood in front of stores. He allegedly engaged them in conversation and secretly stole their keys. In two cases, physical altercations occurred when the victims surprised the burglar in their apartments, though no one was injured.

Given that the known cases span a long period, investigators believe the 49-year-old may have committed additional similar thefts. “If you have been a victim or witness of any incidents not yet known to the police, please contact the Vienna police,” appealed a police spokeswoman. The investigation is ongoing.

A Bosnian citizen arrested six months ago for using the same tactic is believed to be unconnected to the Romanian suspect.

Police Issue Prevention Tips
Police also issued crime prevention advice: “Create an inventory of your property and valuables. Photograph jewelry and artwork and note down serial numbers. Store valuables in a safe, preferably with a combination lock. Keep mobile phones, wallets, and keys in closed inner pockets—be cautious with handbags that have magnetic clasps.”
