A 46-year-old man in Vienna-Wieden caused a major police operation on Sunday night after repeatedly firing a gas-powered pistol out of his apartment window and later aiming and shooting at officers. Despite the threat, police did not return fire and were able to apprehend the intoxicated man without injuries, according to police spokesperson Philipp Haßlinger.

The suspect, an Austrian national with a prior police record, was reportedly heavily intoxicated and claimed to have no memory of the incident. Police measured his blood alcohol level at 1.7‰. The incident began around 10:20 p.m. on Schelleingasse and led to a large-scale deployment, including the special forces units WEGA and EKO Cobra. A security perimeter was established, and the man was arrested in his apartment without further resistance.

Weapons Ban Ignored, Drugs Found in Apartment

Authorities discovered that the suspect was already subject to a weapons ban. Nevertheless, officers recovered the gas gun and corresponding ammunition. During a subsequent search of the apartment, police also found a small indoor cannabis plantation.

The man was reported at large for multiple offenses, including violations of the Narcotic Substances Act, the Weapons Act, and resisting state authority.

Second Arrest After Woman Injures Officer

During the police operation, a 27-year-old Slovak woman attempted several times to breach the cordoned-off area and ignored police orders. In the course of the confrontation, she injured a female officer, who was unable to continue her shift. The woman was taken into custody.
