White Christmas Possible in Austria’s Cities

White Christmases in Austria’s cities are a rare occurrence, with the last one in Klagenfurt in 2021, and previous ones in Innsbruck in 2017 and in Vienna and Eisenstadt in 2012. However, this year, there are chances of snow in three major cities—Bregenz, Innsbruck, and Salzburg—on December 24th, although Salzburg’s forecast remains uncertain. “There likely won’t be snow directly in front of the Cathedral, but the mountains around Salzburg will be covered in snow,” explained a meteorologist from Geosphere Austria on Friday.

Climate expert Alexander Orlik attributed this year’s chances to the relatively mild temperatures in December. The cold weather will continue after Christmas, ensuring winter-appropriate temperatures, much to the delight of skiers and sledders.

Cold Weather and Snowfall Expected Across Austria

From December 22nd to 23rd, snow will fall in the northern Alps, from the Bregenzerwald to the Mostviertel. The snowfall will ease during the night of December 25th. The snowline will be between 400 to 600 meters in cities like Linz, St. Pölten, and Vienna, with a few snowflakes possibly reaching these cities on Christmas Eve. “There might even be some white spots at Kahlenberg,” said a meteorologist from Geosphere Austria.

On Christmas Eve, Austria will be caught between a low-pressure system over the Black Sea and the Aegean Sea and a high-pressure center over the Bay of Biscay, creating cold northern winds. This setup will bring snow to the northern side of the Alps between Vorarlberg and the Industrieviertel. Early temperatures will range from minus five to plus one degree Celsius, with daytime highs expected to be between minus two and plus five degrees Celsius.
