Wörthersee: Missing 38-Year-Old Found Dead After Raft Fall

The water rescue recovered the body of a 38-year-old Styrian from Lake Wörthersee during the night to Tuesday. The man had fallen from a raft into the lake over the weekend and gone under. On Monday evening, the search operation for the man was continued; around midnight, the missing person was discovered at a depth of 38 meters about 370 meters from the Maria Wörth ship dock, reported the water rescue.

For the operation on Monday, special equipment of the Salzburg water rescue was requested. In the evening, the special vehicle with boat and tow sonar arrived at Lake Wörthersee. Colleagues of the Salzburg water rescue searched the lake area with it in order to narrow down the search area. “During several runs with the tow sonar in the search area, the suspicion of a possible find became stronger,” it says in the report of the Carinthia water rescue. Four divers finally went into the water, found the dead man, and recovered him. Around 1:30 a.m. the operation was ended.

Accident on Saturday

The incident had occurred on Saturday around 9:30 p.m. Several persons were on the raft with electric drive, which lay several hundred meters in front of Maria Wörth in the lake, when the 38-year-old fell into the water. Attempts to help him with a lifebuoy failed, the man went under. 45 divers still searched during the night for the man, dozens of emergency forces continued the search on Sunday until it was broken off around midday.

The public prosecutor’s office has initiated an investigation procedure into the accident. The raft, which can be booked by private individuals, was secured. An expert will prepare an opinion on it.
