Nearly 49,000 recipients have been asked to repay Vienna’s €200 housing bonus after exceeding income limits.

The scheme, introduced in 2023 to help residents manage rising living costs, has benefited over 620,000 households at a cost of €140 million to the city.

Eligibility was determined by household income, with single-person households required to earn no more than €40,000 annually. The income thresholds were higher for households with multiple people.

Routine checks uncovered 48,899 cases where the payments were found to be ineligible. Those affected were contacted and asked to return the money.

Speaking to the city council, Housing Councillor Kathrin Gaal confirmed that 96% of those identified have already complied, repaying the full amount.
