Vienna Public Transport Closures 2026: S-Bahn, U3, U4 Disruptions

Public transit passengers in Vienna are facing significant disruptions in the coming months as major rail and subway connections are temporarily shut down for modernization and infrastructure upgrades.

The most extensive impact will affect Vienna’s central S-Bahn corridor, known as the Stammstrecke — the main commuter rail line connecting Meidling and Floridsdorf. The modernization project is expected to continue until fall 2027.

Beginning July 4, rail service between Floridsdorf and Praterstern will be suspended, along with some northern connecting routes. Starting in September, the central section between Praterstern and Vienna Central Station (Hauptbahnhof) will also close and remain out of service for more than a year.

U3, U4 and Regional Rail Also Affected

Vienna’s subway network will also operate with restrictions during the summer. Due to modernization work, the U3 line will not run between Hütteldorfer Straße and Westbahnhof from July 13 through the end of August.

The U4 line will also be split from July 3 until early August, with service suspended between Schwedenplatz and Wien Mitte. Construction work will affect the Badner Bahn as well. During the summer school holidays, trains will operate only between Baden and Inzersdorf-Lokalbahn. Service from there to Karlsplatz will be suspended.

A further disruption was announced in western Vienna after Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) confirmed construction can now begin on the Verbindungsbahn — the rail link between Hütteldorf and Meidling following court approvals.

As a result, the S80 line will stop operating on that section for what is expected to be more than a year. Starting July 4, summer service between Meidling and Hauptbahnhof will also be suspended.

Replacement Services and Festival Adjustments

Transit operators are introducing replacement services across affected areas. During the summer closure between Praterstern and Floridsdorf, replacement buses will operate with all intermediate stops, alongside a direct bus connection between the two stations.

Once the inner-city S-Bahn closure begins later in the year, authorities plan to increase subway frequencies and expand tram capacity. The planned extension of tram line 18 into Leopoldstadt is also expected to be operating by then.

Rail replacement services will include what operators describe as “premium buses.” The City Airport Train will temporarily move from rail to road operations, with buses transporting passengers between the airport and the city.

From fall onward, an additional direct shuttle bus will run between Meidling station and Längenfeldgasse to provide access to the U4 line and reduce pressure on the already heavily used U6.

Replacement buses will also operate along the western section of the S80, serving all stations. During subway closures, passengers are being advised to switch to tram and bus alternatives. For the U3 closure, a dedicated replacement tram service, E3, will operate.

This year’s Donauinselfest will also require adjustments. The festival was moved to the first weekend of summer break, from July 3 to July 5, to avoid overlapping with the Formula One Austrian Grand Prix.

Because the S-Bahn closure begins during the same weekend, organizers said they developed a transport plan together with Wiener Linien and ÖBB. U6, S45 and tram line 31 will operate at increased frequency, and replacement services will be expanded.

The Handelskai stop is expected to remain served around the clock throughout the festival weekend. Organizers will also continue using staggered stage closing times to spread passenger flows.
