The Ministry of Finance (BMF) once again warned on Saturday about a current email scam: criminals are attempting to obtain personal data by sending messages in the name of the ministry. Specifically, potential victims are being tricked into believing they will receive a refund of 500 euros but are required to provide their credit card information for this purpose. Links in these emails lead to fake websites designed to mimic the official FinanceOnline portal.

Emails with the subject line “Your refund processing has begun” are, of course, fake, the ministry stated. It clarified that requests to enter account information on portals imitating FinanceOnline are phishing attempts.

Call to the Public

According to the ministry, official communications from the tax authorities are always in the form of official notices delivered by mail or to the FinanceOnline data box. “The BMF never asks citizens to provide personal information such as passwords, credit card details, or account information,” the statement emphasized.

Authorities urged the public to refrain from following any instructions in such emails, never to click on suspicious links, and under no circumstances to disclose personal data such as passwords, credit card details, or account information. “The BMF recommends deleting such emails immediately,” it said.
