An 85-year-old woman died following a swimming accident in Vienna’s Neue Donau on Sunday evening, police reported in a statement on Monday. According to the report, passersby and acquaintances pulled her unconscious from the water near Raffineriestraße and began resuscitation efforts. Police officers continued CPR until emergency services arrived. The woman was taken to an intensive care unit, but according to police, she has since passed away.

Three more swimming accidents on Sunday

There were three other swimming accidents on Sunday. In the evening, an eight-year-old child had to be resuscitated at the Hirschstetten bathing pond in Vienna-Donaustadt, according to a spokesperson for the Vienna fire department. Police stated that the girl had been floating in the water for several minutes. Her parents alerted emergency services. Firefighters handed the child over to medics while continuing CPR. She was flown to a hospital by rescue helicopter, a spokesperson for Vienna’s professional emergency services told APA. As of Monday, the girl was in critical condition, according to a spokesperson for the Vienna Health Association.

Two swimming accidents in the Neue Donau

Another incident occurred near the Neue Donau subway station, confirming a report by the free newspaper Heute, according to the fire department. Around 4:00 p.m., passersby saw a man go under and pulled him from the water. They began CPR until the fire department’s dive units arrived and took over. The emergency crews administered oxygen. According to police, the 28-year-old man was airlifted to hospital in critical condition. He was being treated in intensive care at the General Hospital (AKH) and remained in life-threatening condition, a hospital spokesperson confirmed to APA.

About two hours later, a similar incident occurred near the Reichsbrücke, in the area of the Rudolf-Nurejew-Promenade. Another man had to be rescued and resuscitated from the Neue Donau. Fire and rescue services continued CPR and used a defibrillator. The 41-year-old man was also flown to hospital in critical condition, according to a police statement. As of Monday, he too remained in life-threatening condition, the Vienna Health Association confirmed.
