Camping vacations continue to enjoy great popularity in Austria, as shown by the overnight stay figures for the first half of the year. In the federal state ranking, Tyrol – even without the particularly strong summer months – has at least temporarily overtaken Carinthia in the first six months. According to the Austrian Camping Club (ÖCC), this demonstrates in particular that camping is gaining importance outside the warm season, the association said in a statement on Friday.

In total, domestic campsites and RV parks recorded 3,020,022 overnight stays from January through June. Compared to the same period last year, this represents an increase of 12.4 percent. According to the ÖCC, citing data from Statistics Austria, most camping took place in Tyrol (906,399 overnight stays). Carinthia, which in recent years had the most annual camping overnight stays, followed with 666,133, putting it only in second place. Salzburg (322,955) ranked third, followed by Styria (301,873).

“Camping is no longer just a form of summer vacation,” said ÖCC President Tomas Mehlmauer. “This is also evident from the fact that in Tyrol, camping took place most frequently in the winter months of January and February and during the ski season through March—by a clear margin.” In the warmer months, however, Carinthia continues to score points with lake-based camping vacations.
