A storm put emergency services to the test in the Tulln district on Saturday evening. In St. Andrä-Wördern, heavy rainfall caused blockages, flooding, and road closures. The fire department described it as a “veritable flash flood.” In Klosterneuburg, 200 passengers had to be evacuated from a Franz-Josefs Railway train after overhead line damage. Two people required medical care and were rescued from the double-decker train with a telescopic mast platform.
The Franz-Josefs Railway came to a halt due to a damaged overhead line between the Klosterneuburg-Kierling and Unterkritzendorf stations, the Tulln District Fire Command reported on Sunday. Train service was suspended and the live overhead line grounded. Afterward, passengers were evacuated from the train and brought to the nearby Unterkritzendorf station. From there, they were able to continue their journey on a replacement train. The two people rescued with the telescopic mast platform were cared for by the Red Cross.
Problems in St. Andrä-Wördern were worsened by slopes not yet fully restored a year after the major flooding. Rocks, mud, wood, and branches were washed onto the roads. Sewer shafts were blocked, and in residential areas basements, driveways, and storage units had to be cleared of water and mud. According to the fire department, about 40 households were affected. Cleanup operations continued into the night.
