A23 Südosttangente to Undergo Major Repairs From March 2025

Asfinags

The Südosttangente (A23), which is the busiest road in Austria with around 230,000 vehicles per day, is set to undergo extensive repairs. The section between the Prater junction and Handelskai interchange will be renovated, and work will begin on March 17, 2025. The repairs will be carried out in both directions while keeping all lanes open, as confirmed by Andreas Fromm, CEO of the Construction Management Company of Asfinag.

Preparatory works, including the installation of median crossings, were completed last year. The main construction will begin heading north, and in the south, the emergency lane will be used as an additional traffic lane. A “trough lane” will be created, allowing for two-way traffic.

To facilitate orientation, a color-coded lane system will be introduced. Drivers intending to exit at Handelskai must keep right, while others can use the trough lane. The construction will be completed in three phases, with the first phase taking ten weeks, and the second phase shifting the construction to the middle lanes. The third phase will move the construction to the left lanes.

During the construction, the detour ramp at the Prater junction heading toward Handelskai will be closed, though the exit toward the city center will remain open. After completion of the works, the same process will begin for the southbound lanes from June 23, 2025. Following a winter break from October 2025 to March 2026, the Prater junction and Handelskai will be renovated, with work expected to be completed by August 2026.
