For the first time, a workers’ council has been established at Amazon’s facilities in Austria, representing nearly 700 employees across the company’s logistics sites in Vienna, Lower Austria, Carinthia and Styria.

The nine-member council, announced by the trade union vida on Monday, will be based at Amazon’s logistics centre in Großebersdorf, Lower Austria.

Jorge Plaut has been appointed chairman of the council. In a statement, he pledged to campaign for “dignified working conditions” and a “respectful working environment.” Plaut highlighted that the council’s priorities would include securing better wages, improving reliability, and enhancing workers’ well-being.

There has been a rise in worker and union activity at Amazon facilities worldwide in recent years, including in the online retailer’s home country. In 2022, Amazon workers at a warehouse in Staten Island, New York, formed the first unionised workplace for the company in the United States.
