The number of apprenticeships in Vienna is on the rise, with a growing proportion of female apprentices, according to the city’s Chamber of Commerce.

Figures from the Vienna Chamber of Commerce (WKW) show that the number of apprentices has increased to around 15,500, marking a 3% rise compared to the same period last year. Women now account for up to 40% of apprentices in 2023, up from 34% in 1990.

Since last August alone, the number of apprentices has grown by 2,000, with about a third starting their training in September.

Around 3,400 companies in Vienna now offer apprenticeships, 100 more than in 2019. The city council is also training approximately 600 apprentices across more than 20 professions.

There have been shifts in apprenticeship preferences, with industry, trade, crafts, and sectors like banking and insurance proving particularly popular.

New technological apprenticeships are also gaining ground, such as e-commerce and medical products clerks. Michael Vorauer from the WKW highlighted the profession of installation technician for photovoltaics, part of the green economy. This occupational field includes around 30 apprenticeships and is subsidised by the city. Around 100 modernised apprenticeships, largely linked to digitalisation, have also been introduced.

A government report in August noted a significant decline in the number of companies offering apprenticeships nationwide in 2023. Read more: Record Low in Apprenticeship Providers as Labor Shortages Worsen
