Austria Extends €2,300 E-Motorcycle Subsidies Despite Budget Cuts

Despite severe budget cuts, subsidies for single-track electric vehicles and their charging infrastructure will be extended, backed by a €1.5 million fund, the Ministry of Transport announced Thursday. Other e-mobility incentives have been reduced or eliminated. As before, buyers of electric motorcycles can receive up to €2,300 per vehicle.

The measure targets a segment not yet common in everyday use, unlike e-cars and e-bikes. Its goal is to gradually replace short-trip combustion scooters and second cars with electric two-wheelers. The previous “E-Light Vehicles and E-Two-Wheelers 2024” program had ended early when funds ran out.

E-Motorcycles Off the Bike Paths

From September through spring 2026, applications may be submitted for L1e electric mopeds and L3e electric motorcycles—both road-legal and prohibited from bike paths. These differ from smaller “e-mopeds” that ride on bike lanes, which some stakeholders want banned due to conflicts with cyclists and delivery traffic.

Industry Reaction

“This decision sends a strong signal for climate-friendly, space-saving, and affordable mobility—urban and rural alike,” stated Karin Munk, secretary general of the Arge 2Rad association. Transport Minister Peter Hanke (SPÖ) called it “a signal for the mobility transition,” noting e-two-wheelers offer daily-use range, space savings, and environmental benefits.

Who Qualifies and How Much

The subsidy is open to private individuals, businesses, municipalities, and associations. Private buyers can claim up to 50 % of eligible costs; other entities up to 30 %.

    • L1e electric mopeds: €350 from importers + €600 from the ministry = €950 per vehicle

    • L3e electric motorcycles (≤11 kW/15 PS): €500 from importers + €1,200 = €1,700 per vehicle

    • L3e electric motorcycles (≤11 kW/15 PS): €500 from importers + €1,800 = €2,300 per vehicle

Further program details will follow in the coming months.
