Austria’s Climate Protection Ministry intends to raise the per-kilometre toll rate for trucks next year, following last year’s freeze due to high inflation.

The proposed increase of 7.7% would bring the rate to 21.86 cents per kilometre, excluding VAT.

Austria’s toll system charges trucks over 3.5 tonnes based on CO2 emissions and axle count, with cleaner vehicles paying less. The 7.7% increase would apply to tariff group A, covering the least polluting vehicles and specific toll sections.

However, the Austrian Economic Chamber (WKÖ) has raised concerns, calling for a further delay in light of the financial strain facing the sector. Representatives argue that rising costs, driven by inflation and CO2 pricing, are already putting heavy pressure on the industry.

In response, the Climate Protection Ministry said the proposed increase is meant to balance environmental aims with the needs of the industry.

The consultation period is open until November 13. Following this, the ministry will need to reach a final agreement with the Finance Ministry.
