Austrian customs officers have confiscated 2,540 bars of Dubai-branded chocolate during two separate inspections of a Turkish bus at the Hungary-Austria border crossing.
The chocolate, totalling 200g per bar and worth an estimated €52,000, was seized, according to a statement from the Ministry of Finance.
The first seizure took place in October during a targeted operation when customs officers discovered 1,500 bars hidden in the bus’s luggage compartment. A second inspection in mid-November uncovered another 16 boxes containing 1,040 bars on the same bus during a routine check.
Finance Minister Gunter Mayr commended the customs team for their efforts. “This interception demonstrates that our colleagues are always alert and responsive,” he said.
“Our inspections are essential to protect honest businesses that comply with the rules and pay taxes and duties properly. These taxes and duties also fund vital public services like roads, schools, and hospitals,” he added.
