Beer prices in Austria are set to rise again in December, marking the second increase this year, as confirmed by Heineken’s Austrian subsidiary, Brau Union.
After a price increase averaging 3.6% at the start of the year in both retail and hospitality, prices are now expected to rise by a further 3.4% in December. The affected brands include Gösser, Zipfer, Kaiser, Puntigamer, Schwechater, Wieselburger, and Schladminger.
Brau Union, Austria’s largest brewery group based in Linz, has cited several factors behind its latest price increases.
Speaking to ORF, group spokesperson Daniela Winnicki explained, “On the one hand, we have a recent brewery collective agreement that means an effective increase in wage and salary costs by 3.9%. Additionally, we are facing rising costs in transport and production.”
Winnicki added that it was “not possible to specify the exact increase in euros and cents.” To help drive sales, Austrian supermarkets frequently offer beer at discounted prices.
