Avalanche Hits Ski Slope in Voralberg

On Sunday morning, a 65-meter wide and 2-meter high avalanche descended onto the open ski slope “Mohnenmähder” in Lech am Arlberg, Vorarlberg (Bludenz district). A ski guide noticed the avalanche slab in the area of the mountain station of the Steinmähderbahn. After a large-scale search operation using avalanche search devices, it was confirmed that no one had been buried, according to the police.

It appears that the avalanche slab had detached in a steep gully below “Mohnenfluh” and had blocked the ski slope. The search on the avalanche cone involved members of the Lech mountain rescue team, avalanche dogs, alpine police officers, ski instructors, and skiers. They were supported by the aerial police and the crew of an emergency helicopter. At the time of the avalanche, the avalanche risk level in the Arlberg region was 2, meaning moderate avalanche danger.
