Police have launched an investigation after a series of bomb threat emails forced several schools in the Lower Austrian capital of St. Pölten to close. Classes will proceed via distance learning.

Police spokesperson Raimund Schwaigerlehner confirmed that the emails were sent directly to the schools. Investigations are being carried out by the St. Pölten Criminal Service, the Lower Austria State Criminal Police Office, and the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution and Counter-Terrorism (LSE).

For students unable to stay at home or already on their way to school, “secure supervision” was arranged, Schwaigerlehner said. The decision to switch to distance learning was made in consultation with the Education Directorate and police.

This follows a similar disruption last week when bomb threat emails impacted dozens of schools across the country.
