Authorities in Lower Austria have made a breakthrough in a violent home invasion case dating back to 2017 in the small village of Stripfing, located in the Marchfeld region. A 39-year-old Bulgarian national, who had been identified as a suspect earlier this year, is now in custody at the Korneuburg Correctional Facility. The arrest and subsequent extradition mark a significant development in a case that left a 70-year-old man severely injured and struggling with long-term effects.

The State Criminal Office’s robbery unit identified the suspect in February 2023, following years of investigation. The suspect was arrested in his home country the following month under a European arrest warrant issued by the Korneuburg Public Prosecutor’s Office. He was extradited to Austria on February 22, 2024. However, according to police reports, the suspect has so far refused to provide any statements regarding the home invasion or his accomplices.

The incident occurred on November 27, 2017, at approximately 2:00 AM when two masked men armed with knives broke into a house in Stripfing after forcing open a basement window. The 70-year-old homeowner, who was asleep on a couch, was violently dragged to the floor and brutally assaulted, leaving him with multiple fractures and serious injuries. His wife, aged 45 at the time, was also attacked and tied up after being awakened by the noise. The attackers demanded cash but fled with only a small amount of money after threatening to set the man on fire, dousing him with an all-purpose cleaner.

The male victim was hospitalized with severe injuries, including fractures to his eye sockets, maxillary sinus, and nose, as well as multiple lacerations and bruises. His wife sustained minor injuries.

Further investigation revealed that the suspect and his accomplice were also involved in an attempted burglary in Vienna-Brigittenau on July 12, 2018. The duo was interrupted by the homeowner and fled after one of them used pepper spray. Notably, the homeowner’s children were present during the attempted break-in.

The investigation is ongoing as authorities continue to seek further information about the suspect’s accomplices and other potential crimes.
