From June to September, Austria recorded 6.3 million overnight camping stays, a slight drop compared to the same period last year, according to newly released data.
“Around 4.3% of this decline can be explained by the heavy rain and flooding in September,” noted Austrian Camping Club President Tomas Mehlmauer in a press statement.
The data was compiled jointly by the Camping Club, Statistik Austria, and the ÖAMTC motoring association.
Despite the overall dip, August saw a record high, with 2.4 million overnight stays, the most for that month on record.
German campers seemed to give Austrian sites a miss in June, possibly due to the European Football Championship. The most popular regions for camping continue to be Carinthia, with 2.23 million overnight stays, and Tyrol, with 1.58 million in the same period. These are the only two provinces where summer season camping stays reach the millions.
Most campers in Austria are from Germany (43%), followed by Austrians (27%) and Dutch visitors (16%).
