Christmas Eve set a new record for wind power generation across Austria, according to the Austrian Wind Energy Association (IG Windkraft) on Wednesday. A total of 79.34 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of wind power was produced. The organization also reported that 2024 is on track to be a record-breaking year, with wind power expected to cover more than 16 percent of Austria’s electricity supply for the first time. On December 24 alone, wind energy accounted for 56.76 percent of the nation’s electricity generation.
“Converted, this would mean that approximately 22,700 households could be supplied with clean, domestic wind power for an entire year,” said Florian Maringer, Managing Director of IG Windkraft, in a statement. Two-thirds of wind power is generated during the winter months.
As of December 3, Austria has 1,426 wind turbines with a total capacity of 3,885 megawatts (MW), according to IG Windkraft, based in St. Pölten. These turbines currently supply 2.39 million households with “Made in Austria” wind energy.
